Bird flu protective clothing
Disposable gloves made of lightweight nitrile or vinyl or heavy duty rubber
work gloves that can be disinfected have been recommended by some agencies
to prevent the spread of the bird flu virus. Gloves should be changed if
torn or otherwise damaged. Gloves should be removed promptly after use,
before touching non-contaminated items and environmental surfaces.
Also disposable outer garments or coveralls could be worn as well as disposable
protective shoe covers or rubber or polyurethane boots that can be cleaned
and disinfected.
Safety goggles are often recommended to protect the mucous membranes of
the eyes. Disposable particulate respirators (e.g., NIOSH N-95, N-99, or
N-100 or EU FFP2 or FFP3) are the minimum level of respiratory protection
that should be worn.
Hand hygiene measures should be performed after removal of protective clothing
and footwear. Any reusable protective equipment must be carefully disinfected
before being brought back into a safe area.
