Tamiflu
Tamiflu is the trade name for the antiviral drug Oseltamivir. According
to Wikipedia, Oseltamivir is "an antiviral drug, a neuraminidase inhibitor
used in the treatment and prophylaxis of both influenza A and influenza
B. Oseltamivir was the first orally active neuraminidase inhibitor commercially
developed. It was developed by Gilead Sciences and is currently marketed
by Hoffman-La Roche (Roche) under the trade name Tamiflu®."
Due to the current concerns over an avian flu pandemic, the world-wide
demand for Tamiflu is at risk of quickly outpacing its supply. Roche may
be establishing partnerships around the world to increase Tamiflu production,
but experts suggest that if--or when--a pandemic breaks out, it may be nearly
impossible to acquire the drug.
Side effects of Tamiflu
Whilst it is possible that Tamiflu may help reduce the symptoms of bird
flu, there have also be reports of potentially serious side effects of the
drug
The most common side effects of Tamiflu are nausea and vomiting, although
some incidences of self-injury and delirium with the use of Tamiflu in patients
with the flu have been reported (mostly from Japan). These reports were
primarily among children, although the exact relationship of these reported
events to Tamiflu is not known.
We have created a seperate news feed at the bottom of this page to cover
the side effects of Tamiflu.
